Edinburgh is a fantastic place to visit and one of Europe’s most historic and picturesque cities. Suitable for short breaks and longer holidays alike it will be sure to delight all age ranges and types of groups including families, couples and stag and hen weekends.
Edinburgh is a lively city with lots of culture, nightlife and places to visit. It’s also home to some fantastic history – make sure you visit Edinburgh Castle, whose central location makes it hard to miss and also adds to its gorgeous panorama. There are plenty of museum and galleries for those who like to take in culture whilst travelling, including the Scottish National Gallery and National Museum of Scotland.
It is also a very green city and there are a number of parks to while away the time in, as well as Arthur’s Seat, a peak that sits atop the city and affords it the most incredible views. Edinburgh can also be used as a base to explore rural Scotland – which is home to incredible mountain ranges and dramatic coastlines.
For those who prefer their trips a little less outdoorsy, Edinburgh is home to a great shopping scene, ranging from department stores and high-street names through to wonderful boutique and independent retailers.
Nightlife is vibrant and eclectic with a wide range of pubs, bars and clubs to choose from. For a mainstream and busy nightclub choose The Liquid Room or for a more intimate and alternative option visit Cabaret Voltaire. The restaurant scene is also a good one and hosts various types of cuisines.
Accommodation
Because of its popularity Edinburgh is well served for accommodation both in the heart of its centre and in its surroundings. Central locations attract the top prices however B&Bs and Guest Houses will provide value for your money if you are on a budget. Choose from top of the range luxury hotels to mid and lower range hotels.
When to visit
Edinburgh is beautiful all year round however the summer months will offer the most temperate, if unpredictable, climate. August sees the annual arrival of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, a two week long affair of comedy, music and theatre. It’s a great atmosphere throughout the city and gigs and events abound however beware as accommodation costs can rocket during this time. Christmas is a lovely time to visit and when Edinburgh is at its romantic best. New Year sees another influx of visitors as tourists and locals come together to celebrate Hogmanay.
